At Beacon Credit Union, we strive to make community an integral part of our philosophy. We support charitable organizations by offering funds, volunteers and time to their events and fundraisers. With that being said, how does Beacon choose the charities we support?
We can answer that with one word… children.
“Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world” (Malala Yousafzai).
We think supporting kids is the best way to help our community grow. Here are a few reasons why…
Kids are the future.
No matter what background they come from, the children of today will be the adults who take care of our communities tomorrow. Beacon supports them by donating to programs like the Learning Loss Prevention program at the Jamerson YMCA, which is designed to close the gap in academic achievement and improve student’s educational readiness and engagement during the summer months. By working with these kids in the months that they are not in school, the YMCA hopes to decrease drop out rates and help kids retain the knowledge they learn in school throughout the year.

Children need a voice that will be heard.
Children who come from abused, neglected or difficult situations do not know how juvenile court systems work. They only know what they’ve lived through and often won’t know how to express this to someone who can help. Beacon helps organizations like CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), who train volunteers to work with children in these situations so that they, along with the courts can determine what’s in the best interest of the child.

Families with sick children need a little extra help.
It’s a terrible experience for a parent to watch a child suffer through a life threatening medical condition, much less worry about where to find the money to pay for expensive hospital care. Organizations like Children’s Miracle Network help make these costs less cumbersome and help sick kids get the care they need. Since Beacon started supporting the Children’s Miracle Network, our resources have helped fund a new neonatal ambulance for Virginia Baptist Hospital, a pediatric center at Lynchburg General, a helicopter to airlift premature infants and babies under six months to Lynchburg General and much more!
