Once you’ve activated your new EMV chip card, using it is super easy. You can still use the magnetic strip on the side for locations that have not yet converted their card readers to EMV chip technology.
To use the EMV chip, instead of quickly swiping your card, you will do what is called “card dipping”. Simply insert the card into a terminal slot and wait for it to process.
When an EMV card is dipped, data is sent the issuing financial institution to verify the card’s legitimacy and creates a unique code for that transaction. This process is not as quick as a swipe, but it is much more secure. Once that code is verified, it will not be accepted for additional transactions and if stolen by skimmers, will not be valid (see our article on EMV chip safety for more information).
You may be asked to enter your PIN number depending on where your transaction is processed. Once your transaction is approved, you remove the card from the terminal slot and your purchase is complete.
